Freeroll Partypoker .com Tournament
March 16, 2006
Men Nguyen is a kick to have at your freeroll partypoker .com tournament table. Witty, impish, and seemingly harmless, he has a tendency to sit quietly, lulling you into a false sense of security, and then when you least expect it, out comes the 10-pound hammer and bam, you're blindsided. There goes your confidence, and your chips. The worst part of this story (for a competitor) is that Men gives partypoker com that happy, semi-innocent smile and then drinks down a Corona, and another, and another. So, you give him the benefit of the doubt, and out comes the hammer again. Bam!
Nguyen is indeed "The Master," a name given to him by players he has taught the art of winning playing partypoker. Only a master could jump right into a $15/$30 game at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas while playing poker for just the second time in his life and win $3500, but lets back up a little. As for the WSOP, Men won his first gold bracelet in 1992 for seven-card stud. In 1995, he won two partypoker tournaments, one in hold'em, the other in stud hi/low. 1996 brought another win, this time for Omaha 8-or better, and 2003 was another double-bracelet year with a seven-card stud win and also an ace-to-five Triple Draw win. His six bracelets leave him behind only Brunson, Chan, Hellmuth, Baxter and Seidel in career WSOP wins.
For those without their poker dictionaries handy, a "whale" is usually a party poker.com high roller, someone who plays for the highest stakes and puts the most action on the line. Normally when these people play, it is in the security and the anonymity of a private home, estate or a secluded backroom in a casino. With the "Whale Game", PartyPoker is pulling back the veil on the secrecy surrounding these games. "Until now, games of this level, with hundreds of thousands of dollars on the online poker table, have been kept away from the public," he said, himself a legendary high stakes player and the Poker Ambassador for Partypoker.com. "With pots on the table than can reach up to $25,000, players better bring their 'huevos' to this brawl!"
The "Whale Game" premiere will feature several prominent partypoker names from the poker, entertainment and sports world. Joining Johnny Chan and fellow player Daniel Negreanu (another prominent high stakes player) will be Dr. Jerry Buss, the owner of the Los Angeles Lakers, actor/poker player Gabe Kaplan (fresh from a near miss at a bracelet at this year's World Series), 2005 World Poker Tour Champion Tuan Le and two players who displayed great partypoker com skills at this year's World Series of Poker Main Event, Tim Phan (who finished 24th in the event) and Shawn Sheikhan, who barely missed the Final Table of the Main Event with his 11th place finish. The eighth player will be left as an "unknown" until the airing of the broadcast.
